The Tobacco Product Directive TPD II is in force and requires companies in the tobacco supply chain to ensure complete traceability of tobacco products and OTPs. These codes need to be scanned:
At pallet level: Scan of the pallet SSCC code
At Master Case Level: Scan of the master case (outer packaging) of the data matrix code
At container level: Scan the outer / container of the data matrix code
At the package level: Scan the package, can of the dot code or datamatrix code.
What is a dot code?
A dotcode is a 2D matrix code composed of dots in a square or rectangular shape. The dotcode was developed specifically for high-speed industrial printers to enable fast printing of codes. Since a dotcode does not require continuous lines or precise spacing, it can be printed at significantly lower quality and therefore higher printing speeds. This feature has made the dotcode especially popular in highly efficient production lines. A dotcode can be printed either in black on a white background or in white on a black background.
Due to the Tobacco Product Regulation EU TPD II, the dot code has gained additional importance. Within the scope of TPD II, a Europe-wide tracking of tobacco products is required, in that tobacco products are uniquely marked and tracked by codes. For this purpose, packaging units are provided with dot codes, data matrix codes or QR codes, which can be captured by special dot code scanners and MDE devices.
Conventional 1D barcode and 2D data matrix scanners cannot read the dotcode. Here, the implementation of new hardware is necessary. Additional handheld scanners that can read dot codes or new MDE devices can be used.
